It’s the last day to register to vote in California. It’s the last day of the Presidential debates. Way to start things off, Monday.
The personal is political in the upcoming election. So much at stake for we of the fairer sex. The sex for which is seems little will be fair if the Romney/Ryan Administration becomes a reality. Not just in the US, but around the globe.
If elected, one of Governor Romney’s day one promises is to bring back the global gag rule, by which we cut off funding to any international health organization that provides legal abortions or supports the notion. This funding never paid for abortions. It provides for family planning resources in places that needed it regardless of whether they are pro-choice. It’s about contraceptives, fighting disease and maternal health.
Romney also plans to cut off US funding of the United Nations Population Fund. Over 170 countries will continue to fund a program “to reduce poverty and to ensure that every pregnancy is wanted, every birth is safe, every young person is free of HIV/AIDS, and every girl and woman is treated with dignity and respect.” (via UNPF)
Over 170 countries will continue to fight so that, “No woman should die giving life.” The US would cease to aid that fight. Cease to save lives.
We’ve had the right to vote just about a century. And even so, our bodies remain on the bargaining table.
As I’ve said before, and will say again, I apologize to my mother, my aunts, my grandmothers. I am sorry that we must fight for the rights you already fought for and won. Won for yourselves and for me. We won’t go back.
Mr. Romney. Mr. Ryan. You don’t own me.
